Offerings Krono offers three key product categories: bars, gels, and electrolytes, and we had a chance to try them all. Bars Krono bars are offered up in two different styles: protein and energy. We found them to be flavourful with unique taste profiles. On the energy bar side, we loved the Cherry and Chocolate in addition to the Apricot & Cranberry combo and Chocolate & Express for a serious boost. Energy bars contain between 29 and 32 grams of carbohydrates so they are ideal to have about 15 to 45 minutes before heading to the gym or a run. For protein bars, our top choice was the Crunchy Salted Caramel followed closely by Chocolate & Banana as well as Brownie. Each bar is packed with healthy ingredients such as quinoa, banana, whole grain oat flour, and protein derived from peas and rice. Krono protein bars are ideal to have after an exercise season to help muscle recovery and replenish glycogen reserves. Gels We love a good gel, something to have at the ready for a quick energy boost before or during exercise, or even afterward. Really, there is no bad time for a gel, especially when they taste this good. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “runners, swimmers, cyclists or anyone who exercises for more than 60 minutes needs to adequately fuel their body for the best workout.” American College of Sports Medicine recommends consuming 30 grams to 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour of exercise. And gels pack way more grams of carbs than a typical eight-ounce sports drink, for example. A Krono gel packs about 24 to 30 grams of carbohydrates in a single package, while a sports drink hits about 14 grams. But it’s not just that it packs a powerful carbohydrate punch. The gels will also protect muscles from dehydration and cramps, and they are rich in minerals and antioxidants. Our favourite flavour is Maple or Maple & Coffee, of course, we are Canadian after all. But don’t sleep on the delish Blueberry, Citrus Fruit, Tropical Fruit or Salted Caramel. Electrolytes Electrolytes play a crucial role in maintaining proper bodily function during exercise. These charged ions, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, help regulate fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, and nutrient transport. According to sports nutritionist Nancy Clark, "When athletes sweat, they lose electrolytes, and if they're not replaced, it can impair their performance, cause muscle cramping, and even lead to heat stroke." Therefore, it is important for individuals engaging in physical activity to replenish their electrolytes through hydration and a balanced diet. This can include consuming sports drinks or electrolyte-rich foods such as bananas, avocados, and yogurt. By properly maintaining electrolyte levels, athletes can improve their endurance, prevent muscle fatigue, and perform at their best.
