Young biochemist Dr. Theodore "Ted" Sallis was working in the Everglades, attempting to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that had created Captain America.

Warned that the technological terrorist group Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) was operating in the area, Sallis fled with the only sample of his serum, he injected himself with it in hopes of saving himself. However, he crashed his car into the swamp where he was instantly transformed into a slow-moving plant-matter creature with large, solid red eyes. Now, the Man-Thing forever wanders the swamps as the guardian of the Nexus of All Realities.

In 1971, Man-Thing was conceived in discussions between Marvel Comics editor Stan Lee and writer Roy Thomas, and together they created five possible origins. Lee provided the name as well as the concept of the man losing sentience.
