Experience Little Feat at The Wellmont Theater on Friday, May 9th! The members of Little Feat emerged from the pandemic with their sense of humor, chops, and collective joy in playing intact. Over the past three years, they’ve focused tours on their epic live album Waiting for Columbus and re-issues of their second through fourth albums (Sailin’ Shoes, Dixie Chicken, and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now). Audience response has been rapturous. The band builds on a deep, over 50-year history. Little Feat used a combination of elite musicianship and brilliant, idiosyncratic songwriting to create a repertoire that transcends all boundaries. California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country and rockabilly mixed with New Orleans swamp boogie led to a powerful sound that has kept the audience dancing for decades. Born and raised in a working-class suburb of St. Louis, Barker took a schoolboy love for singing in church with his family and turned it into a career. The path to his current success wasn’t a straight line from gospel choir to Johnny Cash tribute act. After serving his country in the Army, Barker returned home to Missouri, took a job as a carpenter, and spent all of his free time learning how to play the guitar. He developed strength and versatility in his voice by modeling his crooning on a cast of legends–Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent. His performances quickly turned from hobby to profession, but oddly enough, Barker’s first touring gigs were portraying Elvis, not Johnny Cash. Everything changed, however, when Barker was asked to audition for the part of Cash in a Hollywood production, as it became evident to the director and Barker himself that Johnny Cash was his true calling. Experience Spiritbox at The Wellmont Theater on Tuesday, April 15th! For many artists, a meteoric rise can often mean a sudden plateau. However, for 2X Grammy-nominated progressive heavy metal mainstays Spiritbox, there appears to be no end in sight on their near-constant ascent to the top. Formed in 2017 in the picturesque yet isolated region of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, by vocalist Courtney Laplante and guitarist Mike Stringer, Spiritbox would fully cement themselves as a household name in the summer of 2020 with the release of their blistering breakout single “Holy Roller,” along with a host of other captivating singles shortly after, resulting in critical and commercial acclaim. With new and existing fans eagerly watching their next move, Spiritbox, which also consists of drummer Zev Rose and bassist Josh Gilbert, exceeded every expectation imaginable in 2021 with the release of their genre-defining debut studio album Eternal Blue via Pale Chord/Rise Records. Experience Armor For Sleep at The Wellmont Theater on Saturday, April 5th! Armor for Sleep’s emotionally charged lyrics, energetic live shows, and D.I.Y. work ethic have won the New Jersey-based quartet a loyal fan base. Singer/songwriter/guitar player Ben Jorgensen began writing songs the summer before his freshman year at college, and recorded two of them at a local studio. Weary of playing all of the instruments himself, the self-admitted recluse found kindred spirits in bassist Anthony Dilonno and cousins Nash Breen (drums) and P.J. DeCicco (guitar). Buzz for the newly minted band grew quickly, and by the summer of 2002, Armor for Sleep found themselves in California recording their debut, Dream to Make Believe. Released on Equal Vision Records in June 2003, the record secured the band a solid spot in the growing emo-pop scene, leading to some choice shows with bands like Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, and Thursday. In 2005, after successfully headlining its own U.S. tour, the band released What to Do When You Are Dead, a loosely related conceptual album dealing with life and death that showcased the group’s growth into a heavier and darker machine. The DVD A Comprehensive Guide to Touring was issued near the year’s end, and Armor for Sleep next signed on to the Sire roster in April 2006. Virginia rapper Nettspend fuses trap sounds with a layered, disorienting approach to production colloquially known as “jerk,” resulting in a style that takes the glitches and artifacts of Auto-Tune a few steps further and makes them the centerpiece of darkly ethereal rap songs.
